Minutes of the Meeting Held May 12, 2004

Attendance:
Andrea Gustin, Lisa Gallagher, Karen Rondeau , Karen Kelly, Alisa Iula, Deborah Cyr,  Lori Sack, Nick Leonardos, Stephanie Chiappini, Kerri-Lee DeRusha, Ed Aliberti, Joan DiGangi, Claire Waldman, Elaine Colangeli

Opening Statement:
Meeting was called to order at 7:35 pm by Lisa Gallagher.

Secretary/Publicity  Report:
Submitted by Elaine Colangeli. Minutes of April 2004 meeting read and accepted.

Treasurer’s Report:
Submitted by Karen Rondeau.  See attached.  Tax refund received from Genevieve’s.  Children who participate in clean up of South will receive a book.  $263 left from pizza parties.  Library has money – perhaps Math-a-thon funds to be used elsewhere.  Three buses are lined up for June 8 Field Day to take place at the high school.  Second grade field trip cancelled due to technical problems at Stoneham Theater.  Principal to find out about fifth grade field trip.  Report accepted.

Teacher Representative:
Deborah Cyr thanked PTO for teachers’ luncheon.  Fifth graders will travel to Middle School.  Bus to be provided in case of rain.  Students will have in-class discussions about the transition to Middle School.  Awaiting permission to have former South students come and speak to current fifth grades.

Principal’s Report:
Submitted by Nicholas Leonardos.  See attached.

•       Stop & Shop funding looks good for next year after school homework, but not in hand
•       Full-day Kindergarten has 14 enrolled
•       Student Council going nicely.  May do Newspaper next year
•       HVAC improving
•       Field Day to take place at High School, where more room will allow all children to participate together.  Rain date June 15th.
•       South Pride Day on June 4.  Kids will wear blue/white and have in-class activities
•       Ed Aliberti and Terri Caulkins putting Clean Up Day together for May 15.  Flag pole lights to be changed/plantings moved
•       Wireless microphone system to be purchased for cafeteria and gym
•       Vandalism still an issue.  Flood lights to be installed
•       Memorial Day concert moved to Thursday, 27th instead of Friday, 28th due to sharing of specialists with Robinhood
•       Letters will be sent home outlining a change of procedures for “bump-up” days and classroom assignments next year.  Depending on budget, there may be changes in class size and redistricting.  Siblings would have option of staying together under any redistricting.  Chart to be displayed at School Committee Meeting.

Enrichment:
Nina McGrath.  South has been awarded one of four grants applied for.  Second grade received third enrichment from author Norah Dooley.
Publicity:
Submitted by Elaine Colangeli.  South continues to receive lots of newspaper coverage.  Biannual newsletter to go out in June.  Box tops had best year yet with $904.  Any parent wishing to take over box tops coordinator should see Elaine Colangeli.

New Business:
Submitted by Lisa Gallagher  Stephanie Chiappini has been nominated and accepted position as Vice President next year.  Secretary position still open.  Calendar outlined for next year.  Dates are tentative since United Council meets to ensure there are no conflicts with other schools.  A motion was made to leave up to room parent when to collect and amount if any to set for teacher gifts.  Motion passed.  A motion was made to donate $250 to Stoneham Together.  Motion passed.
